Welcome to Our Family, Izzy!

Izzy the bear, given to Savannah by a waiter at Izzy's Steak & ChopsFor a restaurant to become a favorite of mine, it has to deliver a lot:  service that is friendly (but not too friendly), an interesting menu, prices that match the quality of the food, and of course – scrumptious eats.  Izzy’s Steaks & Chops here in our neighborhood in San Francisco hits all of these notes – and now one more.  On our most recent visit, one of the waiters presented our 19 month old daughter with this teddy bear, now known as Izzy (of course!).

Izzy was a welcome addition to our meal.  He entertained our daughter and didn’t demand any of my prime rib.  He also looks super cute next to a sippy cup and wine glass.  We think he’ll become a regular attendee when our family dines out.  Stay tuned for more of Izzy’s dining adventures!

Farewell to Fois

California dealt its goose liver loving citizens a devastating blow this year, outlawing the making and selling of foie gras as of July 1st of this year.  It’s not like I was out gorging on foie every weekend of anything – but I do enjoy it and starting feeling a bit panicky as the cutoff loomed.

Fortunately for me, my wedding anniversary falls in mid-June and my excellent hubby took us to Gary Danko.  On any day of any year, Gary Danko is an amazing experience that any food lover would appreciate.  But on June 16th, 2012 they really did something special by offering a 5-course foie gras tasting menu.  This was enough foie to fill the void for quite some time.

Course 1:  Foie Gras Torchon with Grape Terrine and Brioche (my favorite kind of foie preparation – delish!)

Course 2:  Seared Sonoma Foie Gras with Caramelized Red Onion and Cherries

Course 3:  Foie Gras Custard with Shitake Mushrooms, Scallions and Dashi (so savory, so satisfying, so unique!)

Course 4:  Squab Breast with Grits, Fava Beans, Leeks and Foie Gras Pistachio Croutons (the “croutons” were pure genius!)

Course 5:  Foie Gras Profiteroles with Huckleberries (You read that right.  Profiteroles!)

This was definitely one of the most memorable (and gut-busting) meals of my life.  A pure indulgence.  All hail Gary Danko!  And praise the Presidio Social Club, which I have heard is exempt from the ban due to its being located in the Presidio which is federal land.  I plan to check that out and report back just as soon as I can.  Stay tuned!

Don’t tune this entry out if you’re a vegetarian. I know there’s a big old pile of meat in the picture, but the basis of this recipe is meatless. You can keep it that way or add steak, chicken, pork tenderloin, shrimp, or tofu. It’s a great way to use up some leftovers you may [...]

I’m a chocolate covered pretzel junkie so imagine my excitement when I heard that the newest M&M’s variety had pretzels in the center!! They’re not fancy but they did not disappoint. If you enjoy the sweet and salty combination like I do, give them a try!

Vampires beware! It’s time for the annual Gilroy Garlic Festival! We sat in traffic forever to get there, but it was worth it to stuff our faces with garlicky sausage and shrimp, garlic bread, and believe it or not – ice cream! Garlic ice cream is one of the festival’s biggest draws because of the [...]

A Fry-tastic Monday Night

Jumbo shrimp were on sale at Whole Foods yesterday, so we decided to buy a pound and decide what to do with it later. I spent some time perusing Epicurious.com (my favorite recipe site) and found a yummy sounding recipe for coconut crusted shrimp with pineapple-apricot salsa. I don’t eat a lot of fried food [...]
